Back in the day when I changed the rear main oil seal I used a puller that looked like a Chinese finger trap to pull the wick around the top of the main.  I have looked all over and can't find one.
Any one know where to get one?

Welcome to the site, I know the tool that you are talking about, but I haven't seen one in thirty years or more. I doubt that they are still available new.

They called them Sneaky Pete"s I have got them at NAPA but you would have too find and old counter man. That knew what you are talking about.

NAPA still carries them. It is in a kit called a rear main seal removal and installation kit. Napa Service Tool #492

Did you get that gasket in place with the pulling tool? Here's my question, how the hell do you trim that gasket flush with the block once you've got that top half in place?? Just another 312'er looking for help ........

I don't know if this will help but check out the October 2008 issue of Street Rodder magazine Pages 124--128 they have another Y-Block article on installing rear main seal using Bestgaskets (manufacturer) new GraphTite rope seals made from braided PTFE (aka Teflon) fibers with graphite for the 312! Oh! Great colored pictures by the way! Is Ted Eaton (EATON BALANCING) the same Ted that"s on this web site? If so,nice work on the article Ted !   KID

Yep, that’s me and thanks.  A similar article but directed specifically at neoprene rear seal installation is in Bruce Young’s hands for publication in the Y-Block magazine and is expected to be in the Sep-Oct issue.  Keep in mind that Best Gasket also makes a neoprene rear seal that’s specific to the 312 engine.
