So don't trust the lost (and now found) pushrods much farther than you can throw them - especially if they are the solid type. The newer "tubular" pushrods are 5/16 diameter if you are trying to identify what you've got.
The old solid rod type pushrods had an inspection criteria of "maximum .020 bow". So if you were to lay them on a ground surface - like the top plate of a bench saw with the cups hanging over the edge, and check them witth a feeler .......there shouild be little or no bow to them.

I would personally suggest the inspection critera is more like zero if you are using the solid bar type.

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(
luvzjohnnycash (5/6/2008)
well guys my dad went over there today, took the manifold off, and THANK GOD, those pushrods were just resting against the valley cover, out of the lifters. they werent bent or anything, so i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo relieved.

i gotta get some new gaskets now, put them back on, and reassemble it.

now.... could this have been the reason it wasnt starting in the first place? my dad seems to think that it still should have turned over a little bit even with those 3 rocker arms going up and down. i told him that he's probably wrong and all of them need to be moving in order for it to start. just thought i'd ask
It should turn over no matter what the valves are doing. Turning over and starting are two different issues.

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

Might as well post here too. How did the valve area look oil-wise? Was there any sign of oil getting up there? Are the rockers oily or dried up? You may have an issue with oil getting to the top end - not uncommon for Y-Blocks. How about in the valley? Good pics would help (not video - too blurry) Order your gaskets, but don't get in a hurry to put them back on yet.

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

well guys my dad went over there today, took the manifold off, and THANK GOD, those pushrods were just resting against the valley cover, out of the lifters. they werent bent or anything, so i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo relieved.

i gotta get some new gaskets now, put them back on, and reassemble it.

now.... could this have been the reason it wasnt starting in the first place? my dad seems to think that it still should have turned over a little bit even with those 3 rocker arms going up and down. i told him that he's probably wrong and all of them need to be moving in order for it to start. just thought i'd ask

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

Don't tear the valley cover off too fast - bent push rods have a tendency to pile up in the valley - and wait until the next rebuild. Friends have told me of 292 engines they bought for parts having as many as three hanging around in there. There isn't much for them to get into - and they don't migrate around. No, it isn't strictly sanitary - yes, it is practical mechanics.
I just bought a pile of "new" 5/16 OD tubular push rods to put in my t-bird (after the motor eating two of the old solid ones in a single day). They are "Sealed Power" brand and $2.83 a piece where I got them. The pushrods can be installed by "bumping" the cylinder you are repairing to its own TDC (the distributor rotor will be found pointing at the point where the plug wire for that cylinder attaches to the cap. The lash can be set cold at .019 - and at the holes where you've lost a pushrod - slide the rocker arm aside on its shaft against the its spring to have a look down at the lifter. Fish your new pushrod down into place on the lifter and capture it with the ball of the rocker adjustment screw. Set the lash cold and go on to the next cylinder until you have done all 8 cylinders (x2=16).

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

Copy:
PUSH RODS - those rod things.
ROCKERS - the things the push rods push against.
VALVES - what the rockers push against on the top side.
LIFTERS - what are between the camshaft and the push rods.
CAMSHAFT - Has bumps on it that lift the lifter/push rods as it turns. Hooked to the crankshaft by the timing chain.
Go back to the website I linked earlier if any of this is unclear.

It might not be as bad as it looks. Could be sticking valves. Could be bad valve springs. Could have been the backfiring caused it. Could be poorly adjusted valves. My guess right now is the cam is OK.

1st - get the fallen rods out. Could try one of those telescoping magnets. Be careful though, you can't get anything lost down there. I've even used a long screwdriver with a strong magnet stuck to it before. If you can't get them that way you can take the intake and the valley cover off to get to them. You won't need to remove a head. You would need new intake gaskets to put it back together.

2nd - squirt some light oil on the base of the valve stems to make sure they are lubed. It'll help if they are sticking.

3rd - check for any bent push rods. They would need replaced. That should get you started. Do not turn the motor over until you get the push rods back in and the valves correctly adjusted. Adjusting the valves cold is easy, but has to be done a certain way. I can post the instructions when you need.

Take a deep breath. Almost anything is fixable. If we keep this up, your going to end up a rocket surgeon

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

No, you just need to tilt it to one side to lift it out. Some pans have notches cut in them to help remove them but once you get it out you should cut the notches in them to help next time. If you have aftermarket pan like vintage speed you need to notch it. It can be a pain to get out .

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

Dont you have to take off 1 head to get the valley pan out? This way you dont have to take off the heads. If you have to replace any then you have to deal with the head and the rockerarms and move the arms out of the way to get them replaced. Make sure you adjust the valves when you replace any roods.

RE: i think i figured out why my 292 wont start... this is very bad guys :(

You may be able to get some of them out with a magnet. Replace them if they are bent. If you can't get the deep one out its reasonbly safe to just leave it in the valley and replace it. Lots of missing pushrods can make a big difference. They often come out because the valves havn't been adjusted for a long time and they loosen up. Replace the push rods and then make sure those rockers still go up and down correctly. Oil to the shafts may not be real visible until you get it started. Also the oil holes and shafts get clogged up. Wont hurt to get it started first and then check out the oiling.
