One thing that is quite un-awesome is the amount of pedal force I have to exert to stop the car. Anyone who has followed my build knows I have a completely new brake system from master cylinder (68 bronco) to the drums. I have a very firm pedal and what seems to be appropriate pedal travel, but the responsiveness of the brakes leaves much to be desired.
I have to pick my heel off the floor and push with full leg muscles to get a braking response similar to normal braking on my modern cars. Since I'm a tall guy my leg is bent at an akward angle and driving around town I'm starting to get knee pain. I'm a very conservative driver and slow down early.

If I really stand on it, I can get the wheels to lock up (I've tried on some country roads) so the brakes are working, but they are just hard. Sometimes if stopped on even a moderate incline with my foot on the brake the car starts to roll backward and I quickly have to apply more pressure, If I have to stay stopped on the incline for any length of time, the amount of pressure I need to keep on the pedal gets uncomfortable (sorry if I'm sounding a little wussy!)

Since I'm not familiar with what is "normal" for manual drum brakes I'm looking for some feedback/descriptions on what it should be like. For example, can you typically stop coming down a normal freeway off ramp without picking your heel off the floor? How does it compare to a modern car with power disc/drum?

Perth, West Australia, All Ford Day

Sunday, the bi annual show put on by the local Mustang and GT Falcon Clubs was held here in Perth. Our club had 40 cars on show amongst over 500 and managed to take out two trophies in the People's Choice voting. One trophy went to an immaculate 56 Mercury
Monterey coupe - very rare here in WA - and the other prize was taken out by a red and white convertible built from a 1958 Aussie Customline. It ended up looking like a Canadian 55 Meteor with 56 stripes. For our cars to take out two prizes shows the popularity of this era of cars. The Merc also took out our Club trophy on the day.
I have posted some photos, so hope you enjoy.

I do have some if you are interested.
Regards

F-Series truck

I saw this at the local aviation and car show last weekend down here in SoCal. maybe someone on here?
killer truck.

Wings, Wheels, and Rotors October 23, 2011 Los Alimitos Army Airfield-68 by PrimerPodcast, on Flickr

Wings, Wheels, and Rotors October 23, 2011 Los Alimitos Army Airfield-69 by PrimerPodcast, on Flickr

Wings, Wheels, and Rotors October 23, 2011 Los Alimitos Army Airfield-67 by PrimerPodcast, on Flickr
63 uni

A couple of short videos of my truck. click on the picture to start the video. The combined spring resistance of the 3 accel pumps in the carbs is enough to limit the secondaries from opening and full throttle on the primary. There are no return springs on the progressive linkage. When attempting full throttle the spring tension actuates the throttle control rod off its detent at about half throttle and the carb link rod stops moving with the secondaries still closed even though there is pedal travel left. Anyone have some suggestions or illuminations?

Nice '54

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-ULTIMATE-SLEEPER-Y-BLOCK-312-HURST-4-SPD-NICE-RIDE-/280733145616?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item415cffda10#ht_21835wt_1002

Local hot rod show

just thought I would paste some photos of our club display in the local hot rod and custom show held this weekend in Perth.
Hope you enjoy them
[/img]

Regards

3 deuce progress photos

Here a couple of progress photos on the triple deuces for the 57 Bird. I finished the carb rebuilds, figured out the progressive linkage for now, and finished tweeking and installing the fuel lines I got from Vintage Speed to clear the choke cap. Next will be setting it on the the motor and working out the plumbing for the fuel regulator and gauge, PCV manifold fitting and hose, locating the metal vacuum lines to and from the fuel pump, and distributor vacuum advance. Then dealing with the throttle linkage and progressive again. All this while waiting for some quality 225/60 R15 tires to come off back order. American Torque Thrust D's are sitting the garage still in the boxes.

Y block friendly machine shops in or near Ohio

Now that I have sold a car I have the money to build the 292 and need to know if there are any machine shops in or around Ohio that really knows Y blocks and what to do to them,I am not going to use any local machine shops since they probably have not worked on any in years. I talked to a local who is a well know racer who builds motors and he admitted its been over 20 years since he built one so I want someone who has recently worked on one,I used a local cheap shop with the 235 I have in my 37 Chevy p/u and it needs to come apart due to something not right.

Holley model 4010 double pumper

Within the last 1-2 weeks Ted and someone mentioned the Holley line of carbs which were similar to 4100s. It was news to me.

Today this showed up in my mailbox. Holley model 4010, list 84012, 600 cfm, mech. secondaries, annular discharge, manual choke. Apparently it has the same throttle plates as a 750 cfm (4010?). The top cover is one piece split horizontally from the body like the 4100s. It looks rugged, and an obvious take-off from the Autolites. The ebay picture and description were both poor, so it was a surprise package.

Holley 2110 stainless fuel line carb inlet connection...Pics

I got some stainless lines from Vintage Speed for the 3 94's. Birthday present. The fuel lines have compression fittings at the carb inlet ends. Will these thread directly into the carb inlet on the carb body and seal? Or do I need an adapter? The threads are correct and not NPT fittings.

Journey from the Southeast to Columbus

I'm heading up Thursday morning, I75 to I71 to I70, hopefully leaving the driveway by 9:00am. Just got it back from the muffler shop this afternoon. Did an impulsive thing and switched from 3 chamber Flowmasters to Magnaflows. Much louder and very like glasspacks on acceleration, more traditional sounding. Has a great loping idle and is fairly quiet at cruise. The headers really lit up the performance according to my butt meter. This thing is way faster than I expected. New set of Torque Thrust D's have been shipped and will go on next week. Working at the bench on the triple 94's and 573. Lots of little stuff to take care of. Next big project is the Granada front disc brake upgrade. I think positractionit is in my future.

312 is up and running with new alum heads, etc.

I have the Tbird running finally. Started on the first crank and ran it at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes. No issues other than a small oil leak at the valve cover. Using the old gaskets until I finish all the adjustments. I had to use the stock exhaust manifolds/exhaust so I could hear what was going on and used the stock 4bbl and manifold as well to be sure all would fire off correctly instead of the 3x2's that haven't been tried out. Did a warm valve adjust at 19 but need to go through them again later. I had the transmission drained for torque converter work and shift shaft seal replacement. I put 6 quarts of Type F in before starting but couldn't run it through the gears at 2000 RPM. Has me a little anxious and added the remaining fluid. Ran it through the gears on the jack stands and it shifts okay. Fluid is not burnt. Going to let it down off the jacks, do some final stuff and see if I can get it up and down the street later. Doesn't want to shift into drive without stalling unless the idle is up due to the Mummert 270 cam. Once the headers are on with new exhaust hopefully I can tune it down some.

Holley 94 carb paint/coating source

I am going through the center carb for the 3x2 setup. I have a firewall mount but don't want hoses running all over. I would like to use an inline regulator and gauge coming from the stock filter on the 57 Bird to a fuel block next to the center/driver side of the intake. I am using rubber 3/8 fuel line to the carbs so it needs to be mounted. Any suggestions?

Smaller oil filter

There is the standard size Ford filter, FL1A I think. Then there is one that has a case approx. half the length of the FL1A. What I need to know is the filter and its application, that is even shorter than the half size. I brought this up years ago on the old forum, but have forgotton what the shortie fit. Today I looked at a filter for Chrysler 2.2 L thinking it was the one, but not.

My remote filter setup has leaked one too many drops, and short stuff would clear the steering box.
