This is EDB-E block with all the ECZ stampings on mains caps, crank, rods and pistons. Does it have specs like a '57 (256 duration, etc)? Or is a high rpm special cam for marine use? This marine interceptor engine also has auto-lite centrifugal advance only distributor with slot drive and special slot driveshaft to oil pump. I assume I can simply install a hex drive pump/distributor and shaft and put this engine in a car? I was in a local salvage yard today and came across an 61 f-600 with the complete motor in it. It has the factory Holley 4 barrel w/ single exhuast. All the externals are there. I'm not sure if its the 292 or 312. I asked in the office and they told me I could have it for $150 if it doesn't run(core) or $450 if it runs. Does this sound like fair prices. I also found a good truck seat for $75 mine ihas busted springs in it. they also want $45 for a vent window.

Any help/ advice is very much appreciated. The Offy and the Marine intakes are painted. I want to restore them; remove the paint, media blast, and possibly polish a couple of them. I tend to like the natural finish of the aluminum but also like the polished look. I will probably use the 573, the original cast finned Tbird valve covers, and I bought a Mummert valley pan and aluminum intake hold downs for my Tbird. The others I will probably use to trade/sell for other stuff. How well does the polish surface hold up under moderate driving use? I was thinking of using Eastwood's polishing kit. I want the car to run at the drag strip as well as take it to cruise in's (and travel on the highway). What are suggestions, if any, and what should I look for a the swap meets? Never had stepped into this realm of making modifications like a different transmission and all. I had initially sent him my carb's only, then decided that I should upgrade to a 573 intake from the 553 that I had to better suit my 312, and the "G" heads...

To make a long story short, I finally found one and he set the whole sha-bang up with a new linkage...front/rear carbs have no idle circuits and are true "secondary" carbs, and most all driving will be done on the center carbs. These carbs are all 1 1/16" throat, and have been on the car (with the old 553) since late '56. I doubt they ever looked quite this nice though...

Thanks for looking. I highly recommend Dick's Hot Rod Place...Looking forward to putting it all back together with the old Hedman headers, and the "G" heads that Tim just finished up for me...:w00t:

Haneline Gauges

Does anyone here have experience with Haneline? Frank is a member here and working on a complete redo of his '56 F-100. He's doing a great job and has a new 292 power plant.

The engine has a front sump pan. I was very surprised because have read previously from owners that it wasnt possible. Asked him about it and he said the pan was in use on the 272 when he purchased the truck, he just put it onto the 292.

All of the front sheet metal was off so viewing was easy, and yes it clears :exclamationmark: . Not by much but enough. The truck has the stock front axle and new axle bumpers.

So this is the second truck I've come across with the front sump. The other was a '63.

My latest 56 Ford

This is my latest 56 Ford 4 Door Customline. Now I've tried Holley. Don't think I'll go back to Edelbrock.

I was having a problem with the secondaries on the Edelbrock - when they open, the engine leaned out, it would stumble. No combination of jets/metering rods/metering springs that I tried even improved it. Nothing Edelbrock suggested improved it.

After talking with another member, I decided to get my feet wet with Holley, and go with a Street Avenger. It included 3 secondary springs. I had to use the black one. Now the transition to the secondaries is nice n smooth. That alone makes it worth it. Some other things improved. With the Edelbrock, when cornering hard - and just how hard can one corner in a 48 year old solid axle truck - it would stumble. The Holley doesn't do that. It seems to rev faster and feels a little more responsive. Jet changes are a piece of cake. On the Edelbrock, the whole top of the carb has to come off. That includes the air cleaner, fuel line, linkage clips, in some cases parts of the choke. On the Holley, it's just 4 screws and a fuel line. The Holley also has so much more available for tuning.

So, long story short, in a few days, I have the Holley running better than I could get my Edelbrock to run in 7 or 8 years - it's all blurred together now.

I kinda wish I had gone with a Holley to begin with but I like to have experience with many things so I can give informed advice.

BACK FROM ROD RUN

Guys, good to be back and catch up on all the happenings, especially the engine masters results, great effort by all. Obviously with the internet, the information is available to attract and inform interested folks. There were about 500 cars in Renfro Valley, Ky on the Saturday the 8th. I have to tell you there was a lot of eye candy in that field. I saw two 1954 Ford Vicy's that were hauled in and I have to say they looked new, very nice. I tried to find as many Fords and Mercs with the y-blocks, but I only managed to find three other than mine. The two '54 Fords and a 1956 Ford. I was stunned to say the least. Out of about 100 Fords and 30 Mercs, there were only 4 y-blocks. Even the Thunderbirds had heart transplants.

For me, the idea of a car show is to show how we can preserve the original look and feel of the bygone eras. I myself like to take cars out of the 50's and customize them just like they would have been done in the 50's. My '54 Mercury has loads of chrome, classic paint colors, and even a Thermo cooler(swamp cooler). I love the fact that I had the only 50's era Mercury at this show. It shows that this is a rare car indeed. I saw soooo many Mustangs and Chevrolet's that I felt like a lone wolf. They didn't even know where I should park at first, so they put me between a Ford Thunderbolt and a 1969 Charger.

Well, it is time to strip the Merc down and get it ready for next year. The color will be the same, but I run an upholstery shop and you know what that meens. Yep,, new interior(everything). I also came into a 1957 Thunderbird 312 w/ aluminum Thunderbird valve covers and all. It runs great with no smoke and I only had to give $300.00 for it the automatic transmission, and the power steering pump. I will be keeping the 3 speed w/ od in the car, but the 312 will have a new home this winter.

I am still looking for a windshield visor for a 1954 Mercury (or Ford or Lincoln).

Pulling older engine, what repairs to do?

I have a 272 in a 1957 truck with at least 50,000 miles on it. I want to pull it out and put it into another truck. This engine has not been run for ten years. It did manage to start and run with only a new battery and a little fresh gas mixed in with the 10 yr old gas in the tank. I cleaned the carb and put in a new kit, replaced the spark plugs and use new gas. It runs a lot better. the old plugs looked like all were firing. No smoke to speak of out the tail pipe. It does smoke out the oil fill cap and the vent tube pointing down on the left side. Stuck rings? blow by? valve seals? I am planning on cleaning it up outside, replacing some gaskets, removing the oil pan and valve covers and do some cleaning on the inside. What else should I do when I have it pulled out? I dont want to put a lot of $ into it. One guy said rework the valves to take modern gas. This engine is going in a work truck, not for show. What would you suggest?
