What kind of headers are out there, for a reasonable price, for the Y in a car? I know Patriot makes a decent set, but they only list them for a truck. Will the fenderwell exit Patriots for 53-56 truck work in a `57 Custom without a lot of drama? If it turns into too much of a pain, I may just use the stock dual exhaust manifolds I have on it. This one wont be very mean, maybe an Isky cam, Demon carb, MSD distrib, stuff like that. If I cant find new headers, anybody out there got any used passenger car fenderwell exit headers they want to part with?

coolant catch can

Concerning the NHRA regulations, does the capacity matter?

chihuahua express

raced my 1954 Vic 292 Y block in a three day vintage class rally in the country outside of Chihuahua City ,Mx

very challenging roads. high speed sections and lots of curves = long 10 hr days. we suffered penelties on Friday ( ran out of fuel ) and ahd to catch up

Saturday kissed a gaurd rail ( lost power steering pump and had to catch uo again )

Sunday ran good ( still no power steering ) finished third in class overall

check out photos and result times om www.chihuahuaexpress.com

will be goin back next year

Carson Scheller

1955 Kurtis GT coupe w/ Y block

I wasnt he only Y block in the Chihuahua express

Ron Lee raced his beautiful 1955 Kurtis Gt coupe which has a lincoln Y block w/ twin carbs. Here is what I have,

This car is from the Dearborn / Detroit area. It's a ‘31 Model A roadster body channeled on a ‘32 Ford frame. It ran in the B/SR division as ‘424 The Blue Racer’ owned by Loren McCombs of Dearborn. It ran a 312 Y-block with a Hilborn fuel injection, but the most significant thing about this little roadster is that it Won the B/SR National Title at the 1964 NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indy, and from what I have been told it is the only modified to ever win a national title with a Y-block Ford ( is there any way to verify this ?). I recently acquired what was left of the car. A big ‘thank you’ goes to Dave Crain for reuniting this car with it's history.
I am looking for anything I can find, there was a picture in Popular Hot Rodding in Dec. 1964 of the trophy run, and a picture in the 64 Hot Rod Annual of Loren standing next to the car with the trophy,..... but that's all I know, any info you guy's can shed on this would be great.

The trophy run at the nats in 64

and how I brought it home

Texas Mile

Have any of you Texas guys ever witnessed this show?

Maybe a Y-Block car ought to post a time someday just to show the colors!

http://texasmile.com/

Next weekend at Goliad ...................

A Hurricane of a Video

I spotted this one today.. Yenko Camaro. He ran .6 seconds under his qualifying time @13.54 and 103 mph. I went a .34 under my 14.17 qualifying time. You are allowed to run .3 seconds under so we both broke out, and they awarded him the round win. In NHRA the rules are first or worst and I would have won. In the second race I lost a blower belt and slowed to a 14.03 @103, the Camaro smoked the tires, but went a 14.02 for the win. Both Races the Ford was gaining at the end, and actually going faster than the much lighter Camaro. I lost, but they knew we were there! Got a LOT of questions and startled looks from the younger fans who'd never seen a blower '57 before. Got some compliments from the older guys, mostly "heard about these, but never saw one" told them "You have now!" :)

Thanks for all the pics!

After having to cancel my plans to Columbus this time it was sure great to see all the pics. The last couple of days I have been working on it. I found #5 rod broken off both sides where the heads of the rod bolts seat. Arp bolts didn't break. #5 piston is destroyed, and the cylinder wall cracked. #1 rod and piston are damaged. There is about a 3 square inch hole in the side of the block. It broke out between two of the pan bolts, the pan flange and side are not damaged. The scraper is demolished, the screen damaged. The oil pickup tube is OK. The cam was not touched. The crank passed magnaflux, will need grinding to remove the nicks and burrs. The other six rods passed magnaflux. The six remaining pistons show no signs of cracks in the oil ring groove where the TRW pistons tend to crack. So other than a little scuffing up of the parts, the engine is not bad. Bearings and cylinder walls look good. It's built Ford Tough!

John

Traction Bar advice

I went to the local Old Time Drags with my 54 (312, 4 speed and 9 inch) and made some time trials. The car ran pretty good, certainly no world beater, but I had fun. The main problem I had was getting off the line. The rear end hops and I had to get off it. I have stock rear springs and no traction bar setup. I am not going to do any serious racing, but I am looking for a traction bar setup that is easy to install (preferably with no welding) and keeps a decent ride. Is Traction Masters a decent set up? How about these slapper bars-I don't know what they call them- that bolt on and have the rubber that comes up to hit the spring? Any other suggestions? I saw the article in the last YBM but its beyond me to fabricate.

Thanks for any help.

My photograf for my truck

Hello Anibal again , I post my photograf about my truck I hope that you like that .
A embrace to all .

Where's the photos ???

Where's the photos ??? I got a 6 volt one, but I have changed the car to 12 volts with a Ballast resistor before the coil.. Checked the voltage on the + side after the resistor of the coil when it was running & got 7 to 8 volts. On the - side I only showed 3 to 4 volts??? Why the voltage drop? I checked the braided ground wire in the distributer & it is hooked up. I changed coils & got the same. Like to get it right so I don't burn up the expensive module.

Any help would help would be appreciated for this weekend Mechanic. Because the Y is not a mainstream engine, the mushroom lifter rule was originally written without consideration to those engines that had them factory installed. Once the rules were written and released for this years competition, there was no going back with an exception in this instance as there were legal ramifications to consider.

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; Of course I’ve still got to move far enough up on the alternate list to actually be called up for the competition. If not called up, at least a bunch of spare parts will be put to use.

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; So hopefully some fellow Canadian will step up to the plate to defend our title just in case one of those "peski" Aussie's decide to show and claim bragging rights! :w00t:

I will miss having good times with my "Y" family, but hopefully I can return next year! For anyone that still needs a hotel room ( I know they are scarce) please contact me before I cancel mine, and maybe I can get them to reserve it for you before someone else snaps it up.

For all that show up, have a great time, hopefully the weather co-operates and I will be there in spirit!

Rob

Freak Race in Finland

Here is some links to go to see what a nice weekend we just had .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghpM0-buz9E

http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c76/ford50/freak%20race%2007/

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v368/Aku_81/friikreis07/

I will ad more after all has been found.

Racing automatics

Out of all automatics out there, which one can take the most beating under racing conditions only ? Anyway, anticiapting finishing paying off my Bird, I picked up the local "Special Interest vehilcle" Bargain News last (well really two nights ago now) night at our Saturday Night Cruise. Anyway, I cam across two '56 Fords, just happens to be my favorite year. I beleive that theyre two doors, im going to inquire tomarrow because I dont want a four door. Theres a Crown Vic and a Customline, both V8s, supposed to be in good shape (The Customline says no rust) and theyre both in the middle of their restorations. I would get it back on the road and finish as I drove. Anyway, now here are my questions.
First, the transmissions. I have a hunch that the Customline is a three on the tree, and I was wondering whats the deal with the overdrive transmission. Is it two speeds plus overdrive, or is it three plus overdrive, and what is the overdrive ratio.

Anyway, I would stick a nicely sized cam in the 272 or 292 to get that nice sound and some extra performance, as well as my own, custom exhaust (exiting right before the back tires), slap on some cheater slicks and get a nice '50s hot rod look going. I would plan to get a 352 or 390 in there soon (dont hate me, FEs arent cheap either but Y blocks are just too darn expensive fo the performance I want, I NEED DISPLACEMENT!!!!!) For the mean time, do you think I could manage to get 15s iout of the 272, if thats what it is? Depending on what the overdrive ratio is I would slide a 9 inch under it, with at least 3.91s. Maybe more. A Holley 600, maybe headers if I could get a piar cheap enough. Also, here comes another 272/292 question, did they come with forged pistons? I dont think they did, but I would probably have the heads milled too, to acheive at least 10.5:1. Ive heard some stuff about cast pistons with high compression, and my general understanding is that 10-11:1 is as high as they should be taken. Is this true? because for 70 cents more a gallon than what I have to pay for 93 I can get aviation fuel from our local, small airport. If I can get sky high with the compression, I'll get it thumping right up there as high as possible without running into valve clearance issues, I think 12.5:1 compression might make for a pretty nasty running little 272 or 292.

Im the type of guy who likes to tinker with stuff, and I would definately spend some time with this car at the strip. Do you think I can get into he mid 15s (with 10.5:1 compression) and if I can go higher witht he compression, how quick do you think I can get? Im willing to pin the needle to somewhere in the 6 grand to 6500 range if theyre forged. Dont want to push the stock shortblock too much though. Could a high 14 be possible with some skull cracking compression? And how high do you think I could even get compression wise before the were valve clearance issues, figure about .450 lift.

Trans Rebuild

The trans in my '57 fairlane is starting to slip after about 5 mins of driving. If I put it in 1st and start out slow it's ok, but if I just hammer on it in drive it squeals. The plate says "Ford Automatic Transmission, 103D-150896, Marvel Schebler Prod. Div., Borg-Warner" Haven't been able to locate any information on it, is it an original ford-o-matic??
I talked with a local shop, and the guy was very familiar with the 50's fords and said he could rebuild them in his sleep (unfortunately i didn't have the number information when i spoke to him)

Is it worth it for me to rebuild it? He said it would be about $800 to pull it apart and go through the whole thing.

I got the car 2 summers ago, and while it didn't run when i got it, its slowly turning into a great running car. I've got a 312 w/ holley 570 street avenger on 1" spacer, MSD dist/blaster coil/ignition control/timing control, headers to 40 series flowmasters w/ rear axel dumps. I'm looking to do intake and cam next - I want to build a fast car, but i don't want to rebuild the trans only to trash it again. Any thoughts or recommendations??? I'm doing some body and paint work and then maybe i'll get a picture up. I've got tons of questions and a lot to learn, but that's enough for this post. Thanks in advance for your help! - John

I know its not a Y, but whats the power potential on a NA Flathead

What would some of you flathead knowledgable guys say the power potential of one is if it displaced someplace in the 280 cube area?
