About a year ago while sipping on a few cold ones and maybe alittle homemade whiskey a plan was hatched. We were going to try a modern day attempt at what Karol Miller did in the 50's but with modern technology. This is not a high dollar project with lots of money thrown at it.(although more has been thrown at it than planned for right) It is a group effort of several like minded friends that drive there cars to shows and have fun doing it. We will be towing to the races for logistical purposes (I have driven my 57 y-block ranchwagon from Ga to Vegas and back it is worth doing) its really is the only option. We will run a 55 Fairlane in the C/CGPRO (C Classic Gas Production) Class. We are going to run ECTA races in NC to sort out a few things and head for the salt In 2010 or 2011 depending on our results. I have attempted to due as much of this build my self as possible verses farming out work to the pros. All metal fab was performed in house with the help of friends. I will attempt to update this as much as possible but I have come to realize im horrible at documenting my work.

Y-Block Powered FED Project

Well I've been talking about building a dragster for some time now and have been gathering parts for a month, so now that I've actually got some work done on it I thought I'd share some pix of the process with you guys. I want to thank Charlie Burns for all the help he has given me acquiring parts for the car and I want to say thank you to Ted Eaton for his help with advise and sending me his Y/Powerglide adaptor template, although I've decided to go with a C-4 since the Eagle Field rules now say "no two speed transmissions" but we didn't know that when he sent it. I'll be getting that back to you soon Ted. :) The C-4 bell I got from John Mummert, a very nice item indeed. :)

Anyway here is a look at what's going on and there will be more to come. The work is proceeding nicely now and I hope to have a running car for the May 22nd meet, well we'll see. :D

2010 EMC rules favor Y Blocks

New rules are just out. Some changes from last year which actually favor us..

Dual plane intakes only on carbed engines

Carb size limited to 1 750-800 cfm

Hydraulic lifter only with a noted exception for the Y Block

RPM range is set at 2500 - 6500

The "Kaase Rule". The winner from 09 has to enter a different brand. Anyone can blow a car apart, but will I be able to pull off a real race car fabrication capable of much higher speeds? I'm sure I'll need plenty of recommendations and help to steer me along, so please feel free to comment or recommend. After all, I feel like this is our project.
Next will be a Mustang II front suspension, narrowed 9" rear, Y-Block and T-5 mockup for crossmembers and engine mounts.

I will be working hard to get this thing to look like a race car. It would seem that with the box I would have more choices for carb selection as long as the bores and mounting locations matched. Also, I wouldn't need to try to seal the throttle shafts and accelerator pump. The bonnet would be easier to set-up, but then you have all the carb mods you need to make. I know the air box isn't correct for the Y-Block, I'm just trying to figure which would be the better way to go.

Thanks,

Rono.

EMC Y-Block Report

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; That engine ultimately twisted the block on a moderate dyno pull to the point the camshaft was difficult to remove. A new set of pistons arrived in the middle of September for the 375” combination at which point the assembly of a new and smaller sized Y started going back together.

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; The best <st1:stockticker>EMC</st1:stockticker> numbers after tuning changes in preparation for the qualifying session netted the Y team 433HP and 416 lbs/ft torque peak values. Still not too shabby for an engine We could have put back in a car (or truck) and driven back home on pump gas. Although I tested the engine at 7000 rpms on my end, it was pushed to 7400-7500 rpms during the competition. It held up just fine to the surprise of everyone at the competition. After 49 pulls on my own dyno, I was reasonably confident that the engine was not going to be easy to hurt. I had already increased the over the nose valve spring pressure from 330 lbs to 388 lbs during the course of testing just to insure that the rpm capability was going to be there. The Isky cam and lifters are showing no signs of wear after all of this abuse.

<SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 12pt; Although I had reservations about using it in the competition due to some air lock issues that were cropping up, it worked just fine in the competition. In fact, the engine temperatures with each qualifying pull were consecutively dropping and the last pull was at 136°F which was in itself a performance deterrent. When I build a new version of the electric pump, I do have a plan on how to make the pump self priming and eliminate the air block issue.

<SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman'; In looking at some schematics in PDF fles for the original VS57 set-ups, it shows an electrical and mechanical fuel pump. In talking to others, I'm told that all you need to use is a mechanical fuel pump with a drilled and tapped hole in the top of the pump (in the correct location) to run a vacuum line from the pump to the S/C unit. Can someone explain the method they use for providing more fuel at higher RPM's and less fuel at lower RPM's?

Thanks,

Rono.

la Carrera Panamericana 09

We just completed the historic 3600 km , 7 day rally ( unlimited speed sections ) thru mainland Mexico with 100 other vintage cars,

We, my 25 year old daughter was my co-piloto this year ,had a comfortable 5:30 minute lead going into the fifth day , but slide wide and put it in a ditch. I feel like I couldn't get WOT? What secondary spring is recommend for that carb? I thought I had fixed my timing and fuel problems but driving it hard on the strip and then 75MPH on the highway home it doesn't seem to run right. Fuel ratio gauge doesn't even read at a cruise (goes below lean). I've spent a lot of time and money this summer and feel like I have taken steps backwards in how the car is running. I know guys on this site are running faster than what I did with little to no modifications. Very discouraging. - John

Racing automatics

Out of all automatics out there, which one can take the most beating under racing conditions only ? Never met him before.

Mike Mendiburu from Sussex NJ

292 + .030 471 blower, crager intake, fenton cast irin headers

some more pictures

2009 Columbus Y-Shootout pics

Jim has the put the link on the home page that will take you to the 2009 <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Columbus pics. Not all the pics are loaded up yet, but there’s already enough there to help satisfy most itches you may have. Here’s the shortcut to the galleries.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

http://www.y-blocksforever.com/EXPO09.html

Thanks Jim as I realize this took some major work on your end.

Wally Kirstein's 56

Just got off the phone with Wally Kirstein. His beautiful 56 Sedan ran 110mph this last weekend.

He now realizes that what he thought was a slipping clutch at Columbus was actually a set of worn out slicks.

Wally was in the hospital early this week and said the last couple of days were a liittle rough but he's feeling better now.

Now that the arteries to his head are fully open his reaction times might get even better, lol

Good news for Wally and his car.

jerry christianson intakes

Does anyone know how to get ahold of one of jerrry's fancy intakes? i've seen pics of some of the ones he's made and i would like to get ahold of one and convert it to an multi-port efi intake.

Charlie's new engine

Did anybody hear if Charlie was able to run his new motor on the chassis dyno? . One common problem is the gaskets where the vacuum housings bolt to the carb. They can be installed in any of 3 different ways. One way is right. One way blocks the vacuum from getting to the diaphragm. One way creates a vacuum leak. With the common connection between the carbs, a vacuum leak at one housing will also leak the vacuum from the other one, so neither works. You probably don't need to ask me how I know this.

Columbus Video

I just uploaded an in-car video of Doug Thrasher making a pass at Columbus. It says he won just about every race he was in in a 57 Ranchero, the picture shows a bonnet...so I presume his Ranchero was an F code. He was also World Points Champion in 1966 with a Falcon Ranchero. I will try to attach a picture of his 57 Ranchero. Someone has a tape recorded interview of Jim, He is no longer living.

Columbus was great again this year. Extra special thanks to the Bob Martin, the Hutton's and Ted Eaton was helping everybody.
