I only have 1 quicktime bell left, I going to use a BBC lite wieght billet flywheel . and mini starter with custom flange ( homemade ) . This combo should be the cheapest and best . I am slow, hate doing things twice

hey all. I have great news. after finally getting ahold of Ross at quicktime performance, and I have confirmed a few things. First off, the bellhousing that they offer is indeed for a car application. Now for the good news. In our conversation about the truck bellhousing, he said that he had just learned that the car and truck bellhousings are different but has yet to produce a truck bellhousing due to the inability to aquire a truck bellhousing to use as a pattern. He said that once he aquired a truck bellhousing, it sounded like he would just make a universal mounting kit for the truck application and then the customer would be required to weld them on and refinish the bellhousing.
He did say that he has sold the car bellhousing to a few truck guys and all they did was fabricated their own mounting ears and welded them to the bellhousing. He did say that the car bellhousing is more than capable of handling a truck application with the mounting ears welded on. he said that it would not damage the integrity of the bellhousing.
So, all in all, i think there is another viable option for the 5spd conversion. Price, i never asked about the price for the bellhousing with the truck mounting kit not welded on.
so, if there is anyone who has a Yblock manual bellhousing that you would think is a decent pattern for ross at quicktime, let me know i would be willing to buy it from ya so i can send it to him as a pattern.

s shop today. Here's what I learned:
The mounts will probably be a bolt on deal. That is what they are looking at first blush. He felt they could jig and drill holes and make bolt on mounts that would be more accurate than welded on mounts. He sold over 8000 bellhousings last year and only 100 were for Y-blocks (I was actually suprised he sold that many Y-block bells but he said there are very loyal pockets of Y-block people out there that need to be served). It's just not feasable for them to dedicate another line to welded-on mounts and limiting the use of a bell for that purpose.
They build 2 basic bells for Y-blocks at this time. One for the T10/Muncie/etc and another for the T5/Tremec.etc. The goal was to hopefully have 1 bolt on kit to fit both bells.
Their combination uses their flywheel with 3 bolt patterns on it. It bolts directly to the Y-block crank but takes 1 of 3 different pressure plates (I believe it was what they call the metric, 10.5 and 11"). With their flywheel, you use normal clutch/pressure plate parts for whatever fits your tranny application (IE: a 5.0 clutch and pressure plate for a T5 Mustang setup).
They also use a FE starter with their Y-block bells.
Great guy to talk to. Had him check one of my racing bells we thought might have been bent but it wasn't (crap, now I have another problem to find on the race car). He was excited about the interest in their product and freely exchanged info and ideas. I was impressed with him and I deal with a lot of racing parts suppliers that don't impress me in the least! He was good at answering all my questions and I know he returns calls (past experience).
This is moving forward. He's going to call me when he is done with my bell and it sounded like things should be available shortly.

This new blowproof is pretty easy to work with. It's all steel. The cone dia. is smaller, so wheel will not work. I have a cut down stock cast flywheel with an offset mini starter, works fine. My step is to save money, is to redrill an after market billet steel, lite wieght big block chevy flywheel, I bought off ebay, make another offset plate for starter.

And believe it or not, people have been racing with stock bellhousings for years. The modified bell will take anything you're going to give it on the street.

Go to John Mummert's web site and check out the bell housing/trans adapter for the T-5 to Y-block swap.It's only 1/3 the cost of the QuickTime housing( which I believe is considered a legal scattershield for racing?) unless you plan on racing or alot of powershifting your T-5/239 y-block. KID

You are right about the full story. I talked to Ross at Quick Time last week and he refereed me to Modern Driveline (208-453-9800) saying that they have the whole package. I was not told about the hydraulic clutch but by the time they told me the prices I figured, not this year. $525 for the bellhousing, $335 for the flywheel and $299 for the starter. I asked Ross what the deal was with the flywheel and he told me it had a 164 tooth ring gear. Basically the FE flywheel thou he did say that I could turn my flywheel diameter down to have the 164 tooth ring gear fit it which is easily done and save some money.

I've been told that this item, although a nice part it is not the full story. It requires a high torque starter for FE and a special Flywheel. It is also set-up to use hydraulic slave cylinder.

Total package around $1000. or so.

I do like the idea. I blew up a pressure plate in my 54 F-100 many years ago. It wasn't pretty. Lifted the floor about 1", dents in the hood and headers. Broke the bellhousing mounting ears off the back off the block. Had to ni-rod studs in the block to save the engine.

more or less the same thing as lm14 is saying. thanks again lm14 for bringing that bell up to quicktime. Hopefully they will have it all done by spring. gonna buy a bellhousing then. tko 500 is going in.

Here's the deal on the QT bell for Y-Blocks and trucks.

Last saturday I took them my '61-64 bell to use as a jig piece. They are going to make bolt on pieces for the side mounts that will work with their existing bells. That was what they thought first after looking at the stock bell last weekend.

Their combination uses the clutch/pressure plate and t/o bearing that matches the tranny (IE: T-5 Mustang tranny would use all 5.0 stuff). The starter is an FE starter and the flywheel is from a company they work with. The flywheel is drilled Y-block and uses 2 or 3 bolt patterns for the pressure plate.

That was first blush last weekend. Hope that helps,

I talked with ross at Quicktime 2 weeks ago about the C4, account they have the SFi CERTS for their cones ( 5 sizes in all ) . They can produce them. But a 25 order is the break even point. I will contact them again if we could get 1/2 of that. Also they make flex plates too ! Bring it in a little closer with a mini-starter. Dave

I also just received my Quick Time bell from you. I want to echo what JJ just said and to thank you very much.

I was having difficulty last year with the tech inspectors because I didn't have a blow proof bell housing. I had to explain that the aftermarket just didn't make one. Now, I think they will be happy (my feet and toes too!).

I fabed up a nice scatter shield, but the Quick Time will look so much more professional.

Looks like it's go , in making a deal with Quicktime , I going have buy 5 bells to start with, but if I want one, don't want to pay $414 list. Stopped into the big summit store, just south of Atlanta , they don't even carry Quicktime products, only lakewood. I have paid more just to have a curtain part .

all i know is that this new bellhousing sure sparked my interest. looks to make it a lil easier putting a newer 5spd manual in my truck, and with the ability to put that tko 500 or 600 behind the y. makings for a solid powerhouse combo in my opinion. i did some checking online, the tko 500 and 600 have torque ratings in the 450-600 range. now, thats wicked swweet in my book. that would work real nice behind a blown and hopped up y-block. Hang on nelly, shes lettin looose. yeeehaw.

I posted earlier about NHRA enforcing their ruling on SFI housings, but more important is having a housing to contain the clutch and flywheel if the unthinkable should happen. I used to run a stick in my drag '56 Bird, and that concern caused me to put an aluminum flywheel in it a year before NHRA allowed "any flywheel" in stockers. So, I cheated for a year. At least I didn't have any concerns about injury to my feet. Losing the SFI rating by welding still would not kill the safety feature. I'll bet the average tech inspector would not catch the welded on mounts. He'd only be looking for the SFI number.

Don't see the side mounts for the truck, But, it's spun steel so it would be a simple task to fab mounts and weld them to the housing. You'd lose the sfi rating when you weld on it however. The original part was cast iron, this is an entirely new piece. And, if i say so, looks like a nice piece of work. Ted, be interested to see how they check out dimensionally.

it looks like, from their description and looking at the other bellhousings, they use a block adapter plate and then a standard bellhousing for that trans. I havent asked but thats what it looks like. gonna drop them a line on the bellhousing. i'll post what i find out.

This is good news. Although I don't run a stick myself, as our cars get quicker and quicker, NHRA may step in and start enforcing the rule on bellhousings. Now we have something SFI approved to comply with the rule. Bruce Young has fretted about this issue for years.
