| okay, we need help, bad. ive asked this on the HAMB on jalopyjournal.com but i felt like i was a retard for asking it because some of the responses i was getting, "its not rocket science" or something. i mean, im only 18 and my dad is disabled and his health is deteriorating, and he can only do so much now...
here's what we've done.
we've checked the spark plugs for bright blue sparks
we've checked the points
we've rotated the distributor while trying to start it
we've got the firing order correct
we've checked the compression
we've checked to see if fuel is getting to the carb and it is.
we've checked the wiring to the coil and it checks out
we've replaced the coil just in case and it checks out to
my dad thinks the float is stuck in the carb, but i think its something else.... please help you guys, and i KNOW i was turning it over for a long time, it was the last video of the day before calling it quits, we wanted to give it one last good try.... dont ridicule me for it :-/

| | Is the distributor installed correctly? Might be 180 degrees out. Sounds like it - the way it's poping now and then. Try pulling the distributor, turn the rotor 180 degrees and put the distributor back in. See if that helps. Wait, first turn the engine over so that #1 is at tdc on compression -pull the valve cover to see that both valves are closed. Pull the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing to the #1 plug wire. If it's in that general direction, then you are not 180 out but you may have to turn it 1 tooth in either direction to get it where i is needed.

| well we never had the distributor out of the engine... we got the engine back in september from some guy and its been on a motor stand since then until january. then in january we did some work, took it off of the motor stand, put it in the 58, messed around with it for a few months while i got some cash to get a transmission and what not.
so in theory it should start right up if we didnt mess with it. the only thing we did mess with are the spark plug wires. our old distributor cap cracked and we got a new one. we replaced it and put the wires back on there, where the number 1 wire was marked and we went according to the manual how the firing order should go.
but i guess we'll try the 180 degrees trick. it just sucks because i've been at this for a month and a week now. it shouldnt take this long... i hate it. i miss my car

| Do you have a timing light? You can check the timing while turning it over. Make sure it's at least close enough to start. The timing seems to be the only thing you haven't checked.

| Timing has everything to do with it starting - or not. If it's 180 degrees out the spark is occuring near tdc of the exhaust stroke. It's never going to start this way. If the distributor is off by a tooth you may not be able to get it quite to where it needs to be to start. Check your timing and adjust as required.

| Pour some fresh fuel into venturis and try it again. It should give you some bangs and booms and flames from the carb if you are 180 degrees off the mark. Or even less than 180 degrees...
Old fuel is sometimes a problem with these recent fuels...
Get in, sit down, shut up and hold on!
