| luvzjohnnycash (5/6/2008) well guys my dad went over there today, took the manifold off, and THANK GOD, those pushrods were just resting against the valley cover, out of the lifters. they werent bent or anything, so i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo relieved.
i gotta get some new gaskets now, put them back on, and reassemble it.
now.... could this have been the reason it wasnt starting in the first place? my dad seems to think that it still should have turned over a little bit even with those 3 rocker arms going up and down. i told him that he's probably wrong and all of them need to be moving in order for it to start. just thought i'd ask
It should turn over no matter what the valves are doing. Turning over and starting are two different issues.

| | For the upper pushrod cups to get out of the rocker adjustment ball - the screws would have to be way more than loose. So don't trust the lost (and now found) pushrods much farther than you can throw them - especially if they are the solid type. The newer "tubular" pushrods are 5/16 diameter if you are trying to identify what you've got. The old solid rod type pushrods had an inspection criteria of "maximum .020 bow". So if you were to lay them on a ground surface - like the top plate of a bench saw with the cups hanging over the edge, and check them witth a feeler .......there shouild be little or no bow to them. I would personally suggest the inspection critera is more like zero if you are using the solid bar type.

| guys... i put the thing back together yesterday with my dad. before putting everything back together we checked to make sure they were going up, (the push rods and lifters), and when we went to fire it up, guess what happened.
squat.
i was in disbelief, i could not believe it didnt start. wow, i thought for sure that push rod problem and the rocker arms were the culprits!!! i even painted the motor before starting it i was so happy and confident it would start!

| Valves MUST be adjusted correctly or it will not start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SET THE VALVES AT EXACTLY 20 THOUSANDS AND THEN AFTER IT'S BEEN RUN FOR AWHILE READJUST TO 19 THOUSANDS.

| did you replace the timing chain?
i'm getting lost with what you did to this engine.
if you replaced the chain/gears, did you double check the alignment?
a tooth off on the gears wont mean anything at the TDC mark when its supposed to fire.
you also mentioned you had spark at the plugs. did you hold one to the block while someone cranked it over?
if yes, and yes to fuel, then must be valves, timing, cam.
