I've been looking for a good rebuildable block.

I found a nice low mileage block # B5AE, can anyone help me with Spec's on this block?

I was told it Mic's out to a Std 272.

I need to be able to bore it to a Std 312, what are the chances the Cyl Walls will accomodate that?

Thx, David

The only way to bore safely is to have the block sonic checked. I've checked a couple of 272's in the last year and they had enough core shift that they couldn't be bored by a lot. Thats not always the case though. Have the blocks cleaned and mag checked for cracks. If that works out then sonic test to see how big they will go. I've been told that leaving a cylinder wall thickness of at least 120 thousandths is necessary for a performance engine. Hope this helps. Chuck in NH

Ditto on what Chuck says.  The 272 blocks seem to be all over the map in regards to how much they can be bored but sonic checking the cylinder wall thickness can help to determine which ones will be best in regards to cylinder wall thickness or core shift.  To make a 272 block into a standard bore 292, 0.0625” must be removed from the cylinder wall thickness and if going for a standard bore 312, then 0.0875” must be removed from the cylinder wall.  If the core shift is extreme, then the potential is there for offset boring which will help to equalize the cylinder wall thicknesses and use a block that normally could not be bored out as large under normal circumstances.

Thx men;

Unfortunately thats a buzzkill, I cant check it before I buy it... It's in PA, I'm in AZ.

I've had a difficult time finding a good low mileage re-buildable Block nearer me. As a matter of fact; I bought one hoping I could use it, and it had too many problems when I took it top the shop.

I'm sure there's one out here somewhere, I'll be patient. In this case however the old adage "build it, they will come" will have towork in reverse!

I find it hard to believe you can't find a buildable Y-Block closer to you. Check with Ted Eaton (on this forum) in Texas he may have a lead. Also post in the wanted section of this board. Are you coming to Columbus? Some could probably be brought there for you. 292 Y-blocks are found in 1955-1962 cars and trucks. Also in a lot of generator and irrigation pumps.

Someone in Arizona got an engine for this guy! Chuck in NH
