I am not aware of any of them coming that way from the factory.

My friend has a 53 F-100 with a '62 galaxie 272 Y-block. He recently put a clutch fan on his. I do not know how it is working out yet. I have not talked to him in a few weeks.

Hey Itman;  Put clutch fan assembly on my 55' Bird.  Have had great luck, runs cooler even in 4th of July  parade.  Got it at Casco.  Also you should use the aftermarket schroud.  Hope this helps    God Bless    Eddie

Where do you find an aftermarket shroud? And where did you find a clutch fan? What was it off of?

Fan Clutch and Fan came from Casco, you might also consider the small water pump pulley from Consours.  My car runs at about 180 to 190  even on hot days and in parades, (4th of July).  Hope this helps.  God Bless    Eddie

As others have mentioned, for a clutch-type fan to work, a shroud is absolutely necessary. There are lots of fan clutches out there, and you gets what you pay for. If I remember correctly, Hayden makes a good heavy duty one, and you should have five to seven blades on the fan.

Has anyone ever studied the comparable parasitic loses of "clutch" vs. "flex" fans? No clutch to fail with a flex fan, and initial costs should be less?

Daniel,

The clutch fan, when operating properly, uses less HP overall than a flex fan.

The more noise you hear from a fan, the more gas it's using. I have done any parasitic study/testing, only relying on my 40-plus years in the radiator business, and reading tons of articles and newsletters.

The positive of a flex fan is initial cost savings, plus a quality one will not wear out. A clutch starts wearing the first time it ever spins.
