Hello fellow y-block enjoyers. I purchased a 55 customline last year that was totally disassembled and sitting in a storage garage.WOW! All the pieces were there and in great shape. I have frequented this group's site several times and have enjoyed the great communication that everyone shares.

This is my first time entering the forum. I would just like to say thanks for all the useful information that you have provided. I hope to contribute any info that I have and look forward to conversing during my rebuild.

I would like to ask what the max 15" tire wheel/combo would be for stock wheelwell. No chopping going on here. Thanks

I believe 215/75/15 radial will work great. Some like the 205/75/15 radials but the diameter is mush shorter than the original bias tires of the period. The max size if using radials would be 225/75/15s and you're on the outer limits on the width of your wheels with this size.

The P215/70R/15 radial might be a little easier to find than the P215/75R/15s. Hope this helps

We have two 56's with radial tires on stock original wheels.I put 215/75R15's on one car and 205/75R15's on the other. The one with the larger tires has been lowered 2 inches in the rear and still has plenty of clearance. The 215's,I believe , are better. They handle and drive and ride better. These sizes are readily available at any tire shop,or,as in my case,at Sam's.

P235X75R15s on 15X7 Crager Street Stars get a little fender mark now and again on a 56 Victoria

You gotta have the right tools and know how to use 'em.

Thanks to all of you for your replies. I'm not sure if I need to answer each one of you individually or I can just post a thanks like this.

TC what offset did you use on you Street Stars? How is the clearance on the inner side at the springs?

Tas, If you're not interested in running the original wheels then you can go to  larger wheels and tires to run on the back. The largest I've been able to put on a 56 t-bird and 56 sunliner is 245/50ZR16s on 16x7 inch wheels with 4 1/5 inch back spacing and I'm pushing it at that. Cutting back to a 235 will will be much safer. I have run 235/75R 15s with no problems.

Gary,

Did you consider 70 series tires, as opposed to 75,  for a little wider traction/contact surface?

I have considered the 70 series and used them and they work fine. But on these fairly large wheel wells on these old cars, I like the looks of the slightly taller tires filling them up. As far as I can tell the tread width seems to be pretty much the same providing the first number are the same. I would go to the tire stores and measure for the tire with the widest track and if it was a 235/75  or  235 /70 etc the foot print area seemed to be the same. The only difference being the 70 being a little shorter. I't really seems to come down to personal preference, they both look good.

as for my two cents....... I am running 225/16's on 16" x 7" rims, standard offset. The are actually 2000 Ford explorer rims and fit my 56 perfectly. I have about a 1/2" clearance on either side of the wheel well with no modifications.
