I have a 4 speed behind my 292 that is out of a 62 or 63. I bought a speedo cable (56 won't work) but need idea of what gear to put on it. Not sure of rear gear. Car was originally auto but was converted to stick before I bought it.

Ol Ford nut:

Determine what the rear axle ratio is.  Then buy a gear for a '62 with that, or at least close to, ratio.  Should get you in the ballpark.  You can vary the tooth count up or down if the first choice isn't satisfactory.

One of the problems with speedo gears is that ford used gears that had "teeth" that ran different directions. One determination may be on what side of the trans the gear was located on.

Ol Ford nut:

Be sure to get the clip that holds the gear onto the cable stub, or you will end up with the gear in the bottom of the trans.
