Ok, I'm looking to all you y block gurus for some info. I was in a local salvage yard today and came across an 61 f-600 with the complete motor in it. It has the factory Holley 4 barrel w/ single exhuast. All the externals are there. I'm not sure if its the 292 or 312. I asked in the office and they told me I could have it for $150 if it doesn't run(core) or $450 if it runs. Does this sound like fair prices. I also found a good truck seat for $75 mine ihas busted springs in it. they also want $45 for a vent window.

Any help/ advice is very much appreciated. I'm learning a lot from all the people here.

The engine would have orignally been a 292. What's there now? Who knows. It should have C1TE heads, not very desirable. There is the possibility of a steel crankshaft but if it does have one the rods will be the shorter 6.250" length making rebuilding difficult. Most 292 replacement pistons are for the 6.320" rods.

I would prefer to buy an engine like this not running. Not much has to be good to be worth 150.00. If it does run, is it going to worth cleaning up and putting in your vehicle and have a reasonable life expectancy of 20-30,000 miles? Not very likely.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping for a 312, Oh well. So is the intake and carb set up desirable off of this engine?

Dozer: Don't know about the intake setup, but if the engine is a 61 it should be block casting C1AE-R with the possibility of the H.D. steel truck/bus crank, which you can i.d. by a completely round rear flange. If in good shape it's worth more than $150. If the 6.250" rods mentioned are marked C1TE, I believe they can be used in a 312 engine as a H.D. replacement for ECZ rods. All this would easily make the engine worth over $150..

If the engine will turn over, it’s definitely worth $150 regardless of what heads are on it.  The 4V intake is almost worth that alone so if your needing a core engine or some extra parts, go for it.  If the engine still has anti-freeze in it, that’s also a good sign that the block is potentially not freeze cracked and the internal rusting has remained minimal.

The engine I got with the steel crank was a C1TE engine just like the heads, How often did they use the AE block with the steel crank? The engine was complete carb to pan with the governed 4bbl dist combo and was factory gold colored.

I know the heads are not desireable due to the valve size but I have a few pairs with the hardened valve stem caps, the question is would these caps be useful on a regular street driver, they do give much more surface for less wear on the rockers and valve stems, although they do add extra weight to the valvetrain.

Thanks for all the input.  I think I will go for the intake and carb, I really don't want to pay $450 bucks for a used engine.

I'm afraid I have to restrict myself to only a few things. There was so much cool stuff there I could easly bankrupt myself buying parts and projects. My wife is already giving me that look

I wish it was that easy, but she sees the bills.

I went and picked up my new seat and bought the manifold(ECZ-9425-B) with the holley carb still on it.

All for $130 I am in hog heaven now boys!!!
