Are 272 pistons available? I see NPD offers them in their truck catalog, but are they the same as a 272 in a car?  If not, can a 272 be bored to a 292? The Ford factory shop manual says the maximum overbore on a 272 is .060 which is not enough to make a 282. Are there differances other than bore between a 272 and a 292?

Thanks for your help!

It's always a good idea to sonic check a block just to be sure how far it will bore. I understand some 272's will go to 292. I have a 272 in the shop now hoping it will sonic good enough to install a set of 30 over 312 pistons. Probably wont but I wanted to try. If not I have a 292 Canadian block that is going to get it!! Dick: Go to John Mummert's www.ford-y-block.com site, link to his block casting list. that might give you the answers.

272 pistons are still available.  I just recently received a set of 0.020's from Schumann's Sales and Service and these particular pistons were within six grams of being the same weight of the std '55 272 pistons they are replacing.  I saw a new set of 0.030 Sealed Power pistons for a 272 at the local machine shop last week so I know there are some of these floating around also.  I suspect the pistons in the truck catalogue are the same as the car pistons but the piston weight will be more dictated by the manufacturer than application.

As Chuck mentioned, block cylinder wall thicknesses vary so sonic testing is highly recommended before going wild with the boring bar.  I've seen one 272 that would go out to a 312 bore and then some but I've seen others that would only go out the aforementioned 0.060" safely.

Other than the bore, the 272 and 292 are basically the same but care needs to be taken with head selection to insure that the compression ratio does not suffer greatly when swapping heads around.  Milling the larger chamber heads is an option to keep compression ratio acceptable.  Head milling is typically recommended anyhow to insure that at least the original compression ratio is retained when using composition head gaskets as the original gaskets were steel shim.

Hope this helps.
