Okay - I ought to just buy one from K&N - but .... I got an oval aluminum air cleaner for my bird and it needs a real oval element. The little housing is made by Wysco (12 long x 8-1/2 wide) and with a 1/2" carb spacer and nice sized element it will just tuck up under the bulge in the hood. The manufacturer lists a couple of elements in a stick-on on the underside of the lid - but both are round and you have to (sort-of) mash them into the capture groove milled into the housing. Duh.

The housing groove is 11.5 long and 8.0 across and 7/8 wide. K&N lists an oval element that is 11.5 x 8.125 - but I'm thinking it will look pretty goofy on each side if I have to scrunch it in there - which is my complaint about the existing set-up. After using their web site to search, I found a K&N number E-9136 that is an oval 11.438 x 7.875 x 60mm ht. that should work just about right - but also more than a few bucks to try it out. Also will have see if it interferes too much on the inside edge of the groove.

The element is supposed to be for a Renault R-19 (fuel injected) of 1989 vintage. Went looking for a paper version - and can't seem to find anyone stateside with replacement part. Anyone got an idea about where to look? Like a brand of import car parts? NAPA guys say they don't believe in putting French parts on a T-bird and the usual cheapo parts houses are hopeless even for a Ford....

Steve:

How about carving one out of a piece of styrofoam, you have the dimensions.  Then you can see how it fits the housing.  Don't try to start the Bird with the styrofoam in there, it will be way too rich.

Saw these air cleaners at  http://www.rjays.com/Billet_Spec/billet-air-cleaners-01.htm It states they take filters sold at any auto parts store.  Maybe they can tell what filters fit them.
