| I have seen many alternatives to the rope type seal. Based on your experiences what is the best type seal to use on the rear main of a 292? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I used a neoprene seal on my 312. It leaks.......... I learned in one of the threads in this forum that the crank must be polished in the seal area or this will happen. Mine wasn't polished...Thus the leak.
I would assume the 292 is the same in this regard.
Look at the seal area polish it if need be and use the neoprene seal.
In the overhaul gasket kit you will receive both the rope type seal " original " and a neoprene, so you have your choice.
I would use the neoprene.

| | On the 292's, I have been using the Fel-Pro neoprene rear seal without any issues. I do offset the seal halves at the parting line though and insure the seal lips are lubed and facing forward before laying the crankshaft in place. I also take a lot of care in the placement of the side seals on the retainer. Typically a small amount of RTV in the hole before putting the side seals in place insures no oil leaks both at the sides and at the bottom where the seal retainer itself matches up to the block. The expansion nails for the side seals also go against the seal retainer and not against the block. A small amount of copper coat sealer on the flat at the very bottom of the seal retainer is also a little bit of extra insurance. Hope this is a help.
