| | Trying to dissemble the original 292 out of my wife's 55 Bird. It appears that the snout of the balancer has been drilled just in front of the timing cover seal and welded. Is this a factory balancing weld, or has the previous owner solved a wear problem by stick welding the balancer snout to the crank?? There are 3 holes, approximately 3/8" spaced at 120 degrees and there is weld in them. We can't get in there to drill out the weld and we definitely can't get the balancer off unless there's some magic process that we don't know. Thanks Paul |

| John,
Taking the balancer off my 312 was tough. They do fit tight. The only thing that holds the balancer on the crank is the fit "tight" and the crank "key".
The holes you refer to are threaded so you can insert bolts on a puller to remove the balancer.
Now if yours are welded ??? with no threads exposed I would think you could use a puller that would grab the balancer "claw type". Caution as this could pull the balance wheel off the hub which has the key way. That would destroy the balancer.
If you get it off you wouldn't want to put it back on with the holes welded anyway.
Good Luck!
