| | I have 56 Ford Fairlane. I have a 71 or 72 351 Cleveland in it with a FMX tranny I believe. Could be a C6 but am unsure. I have tried to splice an original cable with the tranny adapter of the FMX. It does not work...or work well. Speedo bounces. Does anyone know of any aftermarket solutions? Or of any original looking or at least round guages the same size as the original dash that would mate well with my tranny? Or any other ideas of what others may have done. I am tired of not knowing the speed I am driving. any help would be appreciated thanks much!
thanks |

| | What I have done in the past is go to a auto parts store with the cable you made [ make sure that the parts store has been around long enough to have paper catologs and dust] and they can look in the rear of the catolog and get you a cable by discreption. Or if you are lucky enough to have speedometer repair shop in your area they may be able to help. T M

| | Jim: I believe a '57 cable will work. Why do I say this? Well, the '57 T-Bird uses the same speedometer head as the '56 passenger, so that end is the same. And the transmission end will fit an FMX, I have an FMX in my '57 Ranchero with the stock cable. John

| | Don't limit your search at 57 for the cable the only difference you will find [and I din't know what year that was] is when Ford went to the clip on cable to speedo head. T M

| | The bouncing speedometer is probably not the fault of the cable.56 speedo's are notorious for bouncing.I've fixed two of them this week by taking them apart and cleaning everything with electrical contact cleaner and then lubricating them with a very light oil.I used Hoppe's gun oil. Paul

| When I converted my 54 to an FMX I used a 57up cable and got a speedo geer from a 57 up also. My only delima is the angle that the cable comes out of the trans makes the cable hang low and from the back it looks like something is draging the ground, is there a way to change that angle? BTW I also got it from a local parts store took him a couple of days and wasn't expensive I think I paid more for the speedo geer than I did for the cable. Gerry.

| | Paul: To remove your speedo, you have to work laying on your back among the pedals. There are 4 3/8" nuts and clips holding the cluster in the dash. Unhook the speedo cable, take the cover off that is above the shift shaft (and has the window with the gear selection if you have a FOM car), remove the two screws above the speedo dial, lay a towel on your column and roll the cluster toward the steering wheel. Then you can reach the light sockets and wire connections to remove them, and take the cluster out. The speedometer can now be removed from the cluster. John
