Just passed into law 35 MPG industry wide fuel economy for passenger cars in the year 2020. Does this mean the end of the V8 in newly manufactured passenger cars in 2020?

Is that highway or city? I wouldn't worry about it if it's highway and I'm quite sure the technology is available to get that in the city. Doesn't the new vet get 28 on the highway? My 88 Firebird gets 30 on the highway (at 80mph) and it has 120k on the odometer. It's not fast but it has enough power to have fun. Logically I have to think that if my 19 year old car gets 30 then 35 can't be difficult today. It's probably just not profitable - or something.

News reports that Ive seen didnt go into much detail at all, so I dont know if its highway, city, or corporate average fuel economy ( CAFE ). Thank you, Charlie, for your reply and positive view.

I just stumbled across an article about it.

It looks like a CAFE thing.

Thank you, Charlie, for that insight. Its a chevy, but it still gives good info on 2020. Like you say, it looks like a CAFE thing.

I have a hard time relating to the newer V8s they've been making. I am intrigued by the W8, but I wouldn't be trying to modify it. So, I'm happy with the old V8s. If they stopped making V8s, I'd be ok.

I could never afford to blow a lot of money tuning an engine, but others have taken V8s to an extreme. It's pretty cool what's been done, making power, but it's been done and it feels like it's about over as far as making extreme power. I'm into making it reliable and efficient.

Speaking of making V8s reliable and efficient, I'm impressed with the pushrod V8s of the late 80s and early 90s; roller cams, fuel injection, computer controls. And all of this is because of CAFE standards.

I wouldn't get worried about the new CAFE standards. There's plenty of the old ones around and we benefit from the technology.

Best regards,

pcmenten, what do you mean by W8, and who makes it? I think some of the advances you mentioned in the late 80s and early 90s were due to pollution control as well as CAFE.

Gary, The W8 can be found in Volkswagen Passats, for one. Look in wikipedia.com for W8 engine.

Yes, pollution standards as well as economy standards have driven some excellent technology. It is ironic that 'pollution controls', that are so hated, has brought us fuel injection, electronic ignition, computer controls, even roller cam V8s. Having access to factory roller cam engines is so cool.

I love technology, including engines, and I am looking forward to solar power and electric cars. I'm hanging onto an MGB thinking that it will be a good candidate for an EV conversion.

Even if CAFE standards won't make gas guzzling engines obsolete, high gas prices will.

I read somewhere that not only are the manufacturers faced with getting a cafe 35 mpg, but they are going to have to do it with E85, which has much less energy per gallon than gasoline.  Makes their task tougher.  I also read where the huge amounts of nitrogen fertilizers used in the midwest to grow corn for ethanol are washing down the Mississippi river and killing aquatic life in the Gulf of Mexico.  Why can't the politicians leave things alone???
