One acre of farmland of corn can produce only 60 gal of ethanol per year. It takes over 450 lb of corn to fill typical auto gastank with ethanol. If all US farmland were devoted to corn for ethanol, it would replace only 12% of current US gasoline usage.

For every 5 gal of gasoline made from crude oil, 1 gal worth of energy is used in production. For every 13 gal of ethanol made from corn, 10 gal worth of energy is used in production. Taking that into consideration, ethanol produces more pollution than gasoline.

Hey the thing that REALLY bothers me is that reports say that Alberta has enough oil in the Tar Sands to supply North America for the next 100 years! I know it cost more to extract that oil than to pump it out of the ground, but with all the crap going on in the Middle East, wouldn't it make sense to fight them in the pocket book and for the US to support it's northern brother? Keep the money (and our loved ones) at home! With that bieng said, if we have all the oil, why are we paying $4.25 per gallon??????

Rob, now all you have to do is explain that to the tree huggers in the US congress, and your parlement. No problem!

Gary, I thought you'd like that. I know you go for that kind of thing.

It's an unusual design. If I had something with a short, but wide, engine compartment that needed an engine, it would be an interesting alternative.

Best regards,

pcmenten

pcmenten, it says the W8 is two 15 degree V4s, with a 72 degree angle between them. Do you take this to mean 72 degrees between the insides of the V4s, or 72 degrees between the centers of the V4s ? Either way, it doesnt come out to an " even " angle overall.

I say we develop ways to produce the sand oils, and tap all the other North American reserves, tell OPEC to kiss our ass. They'll soon be begging us to buy their oil!

thanks, Mark

Actually processing sand/shale oil has been around for a very long time. In the early 1900's one oil tycoon said if oil ever went above $0.50 a barrel it would be cost effective to extract. I understand its a matter of heating the sand/shale until the oil settles out. Another part of US oil mongering! I personally think our oil is being saved as futures for the major oil companies. When its really rare they will make a big killing in the market. Another reason why there is no rapid movement on economicly competitive alternatives. If our need for oil decreases they lose their big profits. My $0.02. Chuck in NH
