Hi all and Happy New Year. I'm new here and trying to find out info for my son. I was referred by the guys on the '57 forever site.

My youngest son bought a '57 Fairlane about a year ago and has been working on it as his high school project. He has rebuilt the front end, added disc brakes (front), shaved the door handles, added a Holley 650, pertronix module, headers, glass packs and is now ready to tackle the tired engine/trans. We won’t be doing the actual rebuild of these, but will do the install.

He is a teen and with that is some pie in the sky thoughts. He wants about 300hp out of the 292. We have a spare 292 that is suppose to be a '62 vintage. We have not opened it up to check the inside. We were told it was rebuilt and only run for 6 months then parked for 10 years.. I figure it's a good core. The trans is sluggish shifting original automatic.

Now to the questions:

Is 300hp reasonable/possible for a street engine/Ford-o-matic or what is. Tried searching here, but have not found what I was looking for.

Cam suggestions?

Bob: A lot of ground has to be covered to answer your questions.. Some of the engine gurus on this site can help you, but you need to do some research.. For a start, do you have an original 57 manual? And, or do you have James Eickmans, Y-block Book ? (MBI publishing 1984, apparently just reissued.) Also try to locate the 1999 Street Rodder Mag Series on redoing & modifying the engine. Or the Classic Truck series of 2001-2 by the same author, Doc Frohmader. A Y-Blk isn't a "Chebie," unfortunately there isn't info on every magazine stand!.. For a start, if the 62 engine you have has the original code heads, they are not suitable for what your son has in mind. Low compression and very small intake valves. You want to look for at least 1956 car heads or preferably 1957-8 heads. Link from here to John Mummerts Y-Block site for a listing of heads. Also you will need to get advice from one of our Trans experts, as putting 300 HP to a Fordomatic may be a problem with the stock Converter & high stall ones are not readily available to my knowledge. Also you need to locate a "competant" Y-blk engine assembler, which may be difficult depending on where you live etc..  For performance parts, a good place to start is again J. Mummert Y-Block in CA..

Sure is, and more- go to my example here: http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Topic1046-4-1.aspx
I got fantastic help from these guys here on this site.
The car looks great. great job.
Start with a good magnaflux and SONIC check on the block you choose. After that it's up to you and your wallet for horsepower and longevity.
A lot of guys (not here) will tell you to drop a 302 or 351 or ? in there AND it may be more cost effective. But not near as cool and unique-+ it will be much more gratifiing to build a Yblock, In my opinion worth more money-not that he' will ever sell it!
As far as the tranny goes you have options there too! The one you have can be rebuilt to work great. See "The Hoosier Hurricane"
if you don't believe it. Or get a cheap C-4 with an adapter Or do what I'm am, -adapter with FORD AOD.
Look at John Mummert's website for more ideas.

Incidently - since no one else has spoken up - that is a pretty nifty looking '57 .........

You are going to need a decent set of cylinder heads to get the 300 horse number you want - the ones that came on the car are...? If they are "G's" - you will want to pull and check out the donor 292 heads - and may need to swap them onto the car (a driver?) while you get the others reworked.

Do a search on here for the dyno run on Al Frakes T-bird engine - it is right in the horsepower ballpark of what you are talking about. But ..... it has ported heads and a stroker assembly that aren't exactly "sweat equity" parts you can find being built in the average garage.

Thank you for the help. We do have an factory shop manual and the Y-Block book. Most likely have the magazines in the attic. My wife hates that.

Bird55, the link you listed takes me back to this thread, I'll do a search for more info.

I'll check the head numbers on the spare and what's in the car. Porting was on the list of things to do. A friend does this and has worked magic with some of my past projects.

I have a lot to learn and thank you for the imput so far.

I'll keep ya posted. Might even replace the automatic with a 4 spd I keep tripping over in the garage.

hotrodbob,
Not sure why the link doesn't work for you? Search for "Dyno Results" in the Street Forum old articles.
Mine is just one example of what can be done. There are many more on this site. AZ28 is right, about the heads it is essential to loosening the Y. Make sure your guy reads up on what John Mummert has to say about the unique qualities of the different y heads.
Mummerts site is http://www.ford-y-block.com/

Bob,

This car makes 344 hp (calculated) at the rear wheels. This car is a legit pure stock F Code (supercharged) 312. I have over 5000 street miles on it, very streetable, my wife can drive it. Runs 13.70's @ 105 mph with skinny tires and mufflers. Lots more examples in the profile section of this site. Many, many of these cars are at or well over 300 hp.

Mine is similar to bird55.  A little less displacement.  I think his headers are better.  I think I'm somewhere around 320hp.  300 should be easy to achieve.
